This is the style typical of the developer Frictional Games' Penumbra franchise.Īlong the journey, the player can collect notes that offer insight into the story but also help solve puzzles. This can include staying in the dark and moving carefully at the cost of his sanity, or using the environment to create distractions (such as by throwing a bottle to make a noise), and running away when spotted. Daniel has no means of defence, so the game explicitly states to the player at the start of the game that they should use their wits instead. The player collects and refills their lantern, which helps light the way, but also collects tinderboxes to light torches or candles. The game utilizes a lighting system which affects the sanity of a character (darkness being detrimental to Daniel's sanity). However sanity cannot explicitly lead to killing the player, unlike physical health. The sanity system can be considered similar to the one found in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Sanity stops draining when in lit areas, and it regenerates to a healthy state if Daniel solves a puzzle. Dips in Daniel's sanity allow the supernatural to spot him quickly. Seeing and being involved in disturbing events in the game will drain his sanity, eventually leaving him with hallucinations and impaired movement and vision. The game has a health system that includes Daniel's psychological health (sanity) as well as his physical health. The game has three different endings that are largely chosen by the player in the final moments of the game.Īmnesia: The Dark Descent can be purchased for PC from GOG, Steam, and Humble Bundle. He finds himself in a castle in 1840s Brennenburg, and all that he seems to be able to remember is his name, the fact that he lives in London and that something called a shadow is hunting him down. Once here, align some of the smaller crates you threw earlier, if desired. In this horror adventure, the player is cast as Daniel, who, as suggested by the game's title, awakens with amnesia. Once the Kaernk starts eating it, jump the broken pillar in the middle of the room and make your way to the crates along the right side of the gate. To safely make your way to that area, throw one of the body parts nearby into the water. This will allow you to stand on top of them while turning the wheel. If you are still near the Oil spot, I suggest throwing some of the small crates nearby over towards the gate. There is a rotary wheel right next to the gate, but you'll need to distract the Kaernk in order to safely open it. Now, if you look to the far side of the room, you should see another closed gate. The crates to the left of the gate have an Oil laying near some body parts. In this new area, immediately jump on the crates nearby. You should have plenty of time to get to the gate before it closes. Make sure to stay on the crates as much as possible while doing so. Jumping along the crates in this room, you'll be taken to the back wall, where there is a lever in plain view.įlip the lever upwards and carefully make your way back through the gate.

Now, head back to the room I said to avoid earlier (the one closest to the entrance coming in). If you try to lift the gate, you will be notified that it's too heavy to lift, and Daniel will write a Memento noting that there must be an opening mechanism. Now, go back into the hallway and progress forward until you reach a gate blocking the way forward. This will be handy in case you take damage from the Kaernk (the invisible water monster). Jump along the crates in this room to the back in the shelf area on the right is a spare Laudanum.

Make your way to the room straight back down the corridor (not the closer room to your right). There are plenty of crates lying around to help you with this.

Warning: Make sure to stay out of the water as much as possible.
